Programs
All of our Smart Start Funded Programs function to serve with the best interest of children, parents, providers and ultimately the community of Person County in mind.

VIP (Very Important Parents):
The VIP program provides parent educators
to work with parents by demonstrating developmentally appropriate activities for children that stimulate learning in all areas.
The parent educators make monthly home visits, organize parent support meetings, provide newsletters for families,
make referrals to other agencies, and provide developmental, language, vision, and hearing screenings for children.

Services are available to any family with a child age 0-5.

Training for ParentsTraining for Parents and Providers:
Training is provided locally to parents and child care providers on issues related to child development, child care, and nutrition.

PaintingEarly Childhood Scholarship Program:
PCC offers a two year Associate’s Degree program in Early Childhood Education. Scholarships are available through the PCC Foundation.

SubsidySubsidy:
Funds are available through Department of Social Services to assist parents who qualify with the cost of child care and provides incentives to high quality centers and homes that serve subsidized children.

Childcare Professional Development CoordinatorChildcare Professional Development Coordinator:
The coordinator provides support for child care providers who are in the process of attaining college-level degrees through technical support and instruction and attending Piedmont Community College.

Crisis SubsidyCrisis Subsidy Scholarships:
This is a one-time emergency assistance to families in crisis to maintain their child care placement for children ages 0-5 while they re-establish their normal routines.

Incentives for QualityIncentives for Quality (IQ):
This program provides financial support for licensed child care providers who complete early childhood classes at a college level and remain in the child care profession in Person County.

Child Care Resource and ReferralChild Care Resource and Referral (CCR&R):
This provides parents with information, counseling, & referrals for child care providers. Also, resources for selecting quality child care, recruiting child care providers, and offering technical assistance to established child care homes and centers.

Partners in LiteracyPartners in Literacy:
Several programs are available to improve and promote literacy skills for children 0-5 and their families.

• Parents as Teachers and Motheread/Fatheread provide parents with new resources and skills to enhance their children’s literacy. Call: 336-599-1195.
• Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library: Free books are provided to enrolled Person County children 0-5. Call: 336-599-3773.
• ACE: Adults & Children in Education provides Work First parents the opportunity to work towards their GED as well as parenting skills and opportunities to improve literacy skills through the Motheread program.

Community Services TeamCommunity Services Team:
Team is composed of a registered nurse, early childhood specialist, and child mental health therapist.
The professionals on this team provide training, consultation, and technical assistance to the staff of child care centers & homes in order to support the young children served. Screening, referral, and direct services are also provided.

• CST Nurse: The nurse provides Child Care Health Consultation to licensed day care facilities (centers & homes) to improve their health and safety practices. Call: 336-597-2204. ext. 2275
• Child & Family Therapist: A licensed mental health clinician provides child & family therapy and provides individual treatment for children ages 3-5 experiencing serious emotional or behavioral problems Call: Person Counseling Center 336-599-8366.
• Early Childhood Specialist: The EC Specialist helps identify children ages 0-5 with behavioral and/or therapeutic intervention needs. The specialist also evaluates needs and plans classroom strategies to alleviate behavioral difficulties that interfere with the learning process. Call: 336-597-2218. ext. 235

Dancing with DiversityDancing with Diversity:
Addresses childhood obesity by getting children moving in fun, creative & culturally-diverse ways. DWD encourages children to be active through dance & provides healthy snacks, nutrition, & physical education materials for children, childcare providers & families.
